I saw colours during my treatment, what does that mean?
Sometimes, when clients step off the treatment couch, particularly after an energy treatment such as Reiki, they’ll say they saw colours in their mind during the session.
“I saw colours… is that normal?”
The short answer is yes, it’s perfectly normal. And equally, it’s completely normal if you don’t.
People can have very different experiences during treatments such as Reiki, massage, or other relaxation therapies. Some feel deeply relaxed, some drift off to sleep, some notice emotions coming up… and some see colours, shapes, or light. I even have some clients who like to natter all the way through. Your body will respond in its own way – there is no right or wrong.
Why do some people see colours?
There isn’t one single answer, but there are a few simple ways to understand it.
Deep relaxation changes things
When your body properly relaxes, your mind often drifts into that in-between state – not fully awake, not fully asleep.
In that space, the brain can become more visual.
Colours or patterns can appear, a bit like when you’re drifting off at night.
Your brain is still busy (just quieter)
Even though you’re lying still, your brain hasn’t switched off – it’s just working differently.
Some people naturally think and feel more visually, so they’re more likely to notice colours. Others might notice warmth, tingling, or just a heavy, relaxed feeling instead.
We’re all wired differently
Some people are more receptive to this kind of experience. Others aren’t.
It’s a bit like dreaming—some people remember every detail, others don’t remember anything at all.
Both are valid. Neither is better.
Chakra balancing
You may see the specific colour of the chakra that is receiving healing or being brought into alignment.
Energy flow
Some complementary therapies, such as Reiki, work with your body’s natural energy. Without bamboozling you with jargon, that simply means there may be areas in your body where things feel a little out of balance, and energy treatments can help encourage a smoother, more settled flow.
For some people, when that shift happens, it can show up as colours, light, or gentle visual impressions. For others, it’s felt physically or emotionally instead.
Do the colours mean anything?
You may have seen colours linked to meanings, especially in Reiki and other holistic therapies, often connected to traditional energy points in the body. These ideas can be interesting, but they’re not rules.
If you see colours and feel curious, you’re very welcome to explore that, but there’s no need to work anything out unless it feels natural to you.
That said, here are some commonly shared associations:
Red – root chakra – often associated with grounding, releasing fear, and a sense of safety and security
Orange – sacral chakra – linked with warmth, emotional balance, joy, and creativity
Yellow – solar plexus – sometimes connected with personal power, mental clarity, focus, and confidence
Green – heart chakra – often linked with balance, love, compassion, and healing
Blue – throat chakra – connected with communication, speaking your truth, and a settled mind
Indigo / violet – third eye and crown – linked with intuition, spiritual connection, calm, and deeper awareness
White or light – often a sense of stillness, clarity, or openness
Gold or white – sometimes associated with warmth, comfort, purification, or a sense of support
That said, one colour can mean different things to different people, so it’s always personal.
What matters most during your treatment
Seeing colours, or not, is in no way a reflection of how effective your session has been.
What really matters is how you feel afterwards – more relaxed, a bit lighter, calmer in yourself, out of pain, or simply glad you took the time for self-care. This is where the real value is.
A quick word about Reiki
If you’re still not completely sure what Reiki is, rest assured, you will not be alone.
Reiki is a gentle, non-invasive treatment that works with your body’s natural energy to support relaxation and balance. In simple terms, it helps your body move out of that busy, stressed state and into a calmer one where it can rest, reset, and restore.
Each session is unique. You might see colours, you might not. You might drift off, or just enjoy the quiet. Either way, your body is getting what it needs in that moment.
Many people come for Reiki in Sandwich or Deal, Kent because they’re feeling stressed, overwhelmed, or simply in need of time to switch off. There’s no pressure to feel or experience anything specific, just a calm, supportive space where you can properly relax.
