Traditional or Brazilian Lymphatic Drainage…which is the best for you?

January 15, 2026

Not all lymphatic drainage is the same – understanding the difference

I’m noticing more and more people searching for, or promoting lymphatic drainage massage and meaning very different things.

As a professional with 30 years industry experience, I’m fortunate to understand the differences in most treatments and make an informed decision on which would be best for me and my needs.

A couple of clients recently have been asking me about Brazilian Lymphatic Drainage, often shared on social media.

They’ve been asking if it is as effective and has the same benefits as traditional lymphatic drainage..

Well, both work with your lymphatic system, and, whilst there are some similarities, they can be very different in aim, pressure, training, and outcomes.

So, to help you make an informed decision, I thought it might be helpful to write a blog to help explain the differences clearly and simply, so you can choose the right treatment for you, your health, and your needs.

A quick word about your lymphatic system and why technique matters

Your lymphatic system is part of your immune system. It helps move excess fluid, waste products, and toxins away from tissues through your lymph nodes to be filtered.  It then returns the clean fluid to your bloodstream to help protect you against infection and disease.

Unlike your blood circulation, your lymphatic system doesn’t have a pump. It relies on gentle movement, breathing, and very light, rhythmic touch to work well. Remember that detail, it matters.

Traditional lymphatic drainage massage

Traditional MLD was developed in France in the 1930s by Dr Emil Vodder and his wife.

Manual lymphatic drainage is a clinically informed therapy that supports healthy lymphatic function and helps manage swelling in a gentle, carefully controlled way.

In the UK, there are four main schools that teach traditional style manual lymphatic drainage.

Casley-Smith Method

Fӧldi Method

Leduc Method

Vodder Technique

All are slightly different but are all:

  • Very gentle and slow
  • Light, rhythmic, and precise
  • Designed to encourage the natural movement of lymph
  • Therapeutic rather than aesthetic

The pressure is intentionally light.  Your lymph vessels sit just under your skin meaning deep or forceful work isn’t needed, and can actually be counterproductive.

Traditional Manual Lymphatic Drainage massage is often used to support:

  • Swelling and fluid retention (oedema)
  • Post‑surgery recovery, particularly after tummy tuck surgery, breast enhancement, mummy make-overs or face lifts
  • Conditions of the lymphatic system
  • Inflammation
  • Immune system support
  • Nervous system regulation and deep relaxation

People often describe it as:

  • Extremely calming
  • Gentle but effective
  • Non‑painful
  • Restorative rather than stimulating
  • Mentally clearing

Brazilian lymphatic drainage massage (often called Brazilian Sculpting)

Evolving from Vodder’s method, this gained popularity in Brazil in the 1970s as a beauty treatment.

Brazilian lymphatic drainage is not a medical approach and is generally offered as a wellness or aesthetic treatment.

This is the style of lymphatic drainage that many people recognise from social media. It’s sometimes called Brazilian Lymphatic Drainage, Brazilian Sculpting, or BLD  which can add to the confusion.

Brazilian lymphatic drainage massage is primarily aesthetic. The main aim is visible body contouring rather than therapeutic lymph support.

Brazilian lymphatic-style work is usually:

  • Firm and vigorous
  • Faster paced
  • Focused on sculpting and shaping your body
  • Aimed at reducing the appearance of cellulite and creating definition

It often involves:

  • Deeper pressure
  • Rhythmic, sculpting strokes
  • Tools such as wooden implements (maderotherapy), suction cups (gliding cupping), or silicone gloves

People often describe it as:

  • More intense
  • Occasionally uncomfortable
  • Producing an immediate feeling of lightness or visible shaping

It’s commonly chosen for:

  • Pre-event body shaping
  • Cosmetic contouring
  • Short-term visual results

While Brazilian methods share some treatment protocols with traditional lymphatic drainage, the intention is commonly cosmetic enhancement rather than gentle therapeutic support.

Self lymphatic drainage massage (SLD)

SLD is another term you may have come across when searching for lymphatic drainage.

As the name suggests, this is lypmphatic drainage you carry out on yourself.

Simple, basic techniques are taught to patients for at-home management of lymph conditions.

If you’d like to support your lymphatic system at home, social media channels are a great source of information.

For my clients with puffy ankles, I often recommend leg elevation, opening the nodes, and a long handled body brush to help stroke from the foot towards the groin more easily than your hands alone.

Brazilian lymphatic drainage vs traditional MLD – a simple way to understand the difference

If it helps, maybe think of it this way:

  • Brazilian lymphatic / sculpting is more about how you look
  • Traditional MLD is more about how your body functions

Both have their place, both share similarities, but are generally considered not to be interchangeable treatments.

Why I choose to practise traditional MLD

The most important person in my treatment room is you! My work has always been rooted in your care, your safety, and your long‑term wellbeing.

I trained in the Vodder inspired approach through a year‑long course at a local college, with detailed study of anatomy, physiology, and the lymphatic system itself. This style of training is thorough, regulated, and grounded in understanding how the body truly works.

I have also taken additional training with industry specialists and in pre and post op lymphatic drainage massage.

Traditional, Vodder‑inspired lymphatic drainage:

  • Works with your body rather than forcing change
  • Supports your lymphatic and nervous systems gently
  • Prioritises health over quick visual results
  • Focusses on improving your lymphatic function in a safe and controlled way

For many clients, the benefits are subtle but meaningful – reduced heaviness, less puffiness, improved comfort, reduced brain fog, and a deep sense of calm.

I like to be transparent about the type of lymphatic drainage I offer, so you can make an informed choice that feels right for you and meets your needs.

Lymphatic drainage massage – frequently asked questions

Every person is unique and every desired outcome is individual to you. If your question is not answered below, please do feel free to drop me an email and I will do everything I can do help.

“Will I see results if it’s so gentle?”
Yes – but they’re different results. Traditional MLD isn’t about instant visual change. Clients often notice reduced puffiness, less heaviness, improved comfort, better sleep, and a general feeling of ease in the body. These changes can build over time.

“Why is the pressure so light?”
Because lymph vessels sit just under the skin. Heavy pressure isn’t needed and can actually slow things down. The light, rhythmic touch is intentional and based on how the lymphatic system naturally works.

“Is traditional MLD really effective if it doesn’t sculpt?”
Absolutely. Its effectiveness is measured in how the body functions, not how it looks. It’s widely used to support swelling, recovery, immune health, and nervous system regulation.

“I’ve had Brazilian lymphatic drainage before – is this the same?”
No. While both mention the lymphatic system, they feel very different and have different aims. Brazilian-style treatments tend to focus on shaping and appearance; traditional MLD focuses on gentle therapeutic support.

“Which treatment is right for me?”
That depends on what you’re looking for. If your priority is visible contouring for an event, Brazilian-style work may suit you better. If you’re looking for calm, support, and overall wellbeing, traditional MLD is often the better fit.

“I’m still undecided, can you help?”
Of course! If you’re ever unsure whether traditional MLD or another style is more suitable, I’m always happy to talk through your hopes and objectives.
